Udayana University Faculty of Medicine Team Won 1st Place at the National Congress of Neurology
An extraordinary achievement has been achieved by Udayana University Faculty of Medicine students, Anak Agung Istri Kosalya Arini (PSSK 2020) and Bryan Gervais de Liyis (PSPD 2019) under the guidance of Dr. Nyoman Angga Krishna Pramana, Sp.N, FINR, FINA. They won 1st place in the Research Oral Presentation event at the 10th Bali Neurology Update (BaNU) which was held on November 19-20, 2023 at Prime Plaza Hotel Sanur, Bali. With the theme "New Trends and Challenges in Neurodegenerative Disorders, and Pain", this event gathered participants from various backgrounds, including specialists, residents, general practitioners, and students from all over Indonesia.
Kosalya and Bryan's notable achievement lies in the presentation of their study on the impact of Endovascular Therapy (EVT) on cognitive and functional outcomes in patients with cerebral vascular blockages. They found a consistent trend in favor of a positive effect of endovascular thrombectomy on cognitive improvement, as assessed by various cognitive assessment tools. Further analysis showed significant benefits on functional outcomes using the Modified Rankin Scale (mRS), patient quality of life as measured by the Barthel Index (BI) and European Quality of Life Five Dimension (EQ-5D) scores, as well as reperfusion rate evaluated through the TICI score. The findings together found that endovascular therapy not only improved cognitive and functional outcomes, but also improved reperfusion rates compared to standard medical care.
The event was also attended by various important figures, including Prof. Dr. Komang Januartha Putra Pinatih, M. Kes. as dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Udayana University, Prof.Dr. dr. I Made Oka Adnyana, Sp.S (K) as Head of the Department of Neurology FK Udayana, Prof. Andrew S.C.. Rice, MD, FRCP, FRCA, FFPMRCA, FFPMCAI as President Elect of the International Association for the Study of Pain from Imperial College London, United Kingdom, and Dr. dr. I Putu Eka Widyadharma, M.Sc, Sp.S (K) as Chairman of Perdosni Denpasar Branch.
This success not only reflects their high dedication in the field of neurology, but also strengthens Udayana University's position as an educational institution that encourages the development of science and innovation in the medical field. This achievement also makes a valuable contribution to efforts to improve the understanding and management of neurovascular disease in Indonesia. The success of the research team is not only a source of pride for the individuals involved, but also an important milestone in presenting a positive contribution to the development of neurovascular science at the national level.
