Increasing the Awareness of Law School Rankings, Faculty of Law Udayana University conducted an International Workshop “The Importance of Research Strategy and Outcome for Law School Rankings”
Denpasar- The issue of law school ranking has become important among the law school in every country. Increasing the awareness of research and the capacity of human research in conducting research will elevate and support the law school in a significant way.
Following this issue, Faculty of Law Udayana University has conducted an International Workshop “The Importance of Research Strategy and Outcome for Law School Rankings” on Monday, April 11, 2022, located at the Hall of Faculty of Law, Udayana University. There are two honorable speakers were invited, namely: Prof. Andrew D. Mitchell (Professor and Associate Dean (Research) of Monash Law School) and Prof. Dr. Ni Ketut Supasti Dharmawan, S.H., M. Hum., LLM (Professor of Faculty of Law Udayana University). The discussion was moderated by I Made Budi Arsika, S.H., LLM, a Lecturer at the Faculty of Law Udayana University. According to I Gusti Ngurah Parikesit Widiatedja, S.H., M. Hum., LLM., Ph.D, the coordinator of the workshop, the workshop was attended by 50 participants, while around 600 participants joined it online through webex.
In this international workshop, the opening remark was delivered by Dr. Desak Putu Dewi Kasih, SH., M. Hum, the Vice Dean of Academic Affairs on the behalf of Dr. Putu Gede Arya Sumerta Yasa, SH., M.Hum, Dean of Faculty of Law Udayana University. The workshop mainly discussed about the importance of research to elevate the law school rank.
The first session was delivered by Prof. Andrew D. Mitchell, Professor and
Associate Dean (Research) of Monash Law School. During his session, he
emphasized that international collaboration is important to lead high-quality
research, broader range and opportunity for academics, as well as improve the
standards between faculties. This collaboration shall involve students; hence
it will increase a mutual beneficial. Another point that was emphasized that in
terms of research, the co-authorship between junior, senior researcher and the
academic staff must be mantained. It is necessary to be done in order to
monitor and encourage the performance during research, performing research in
good faith, conducting the research based on their expertise as well as their
career level. Prof. Andrew D. Mitchell also addressed that if later on Udayana
University wants to increase its rank, then there several things shall be
noted, such as: 1) increase the staff number, the quality of the staff, and
increase international staff; and 2) increase the publication of journal,
especially in reputable international journal. He mentioned that Udayana has
huge potential and he is waiting forward for a collaboration between Faculty of
Law Udayana University and Monash Law School.
The second session was delivered by Prof. Dr. Ni Ketut Supasti Dharmawan, S.H., M.Hum., LLM, Professor of Faculty of Law Udayana University. During her session, she delivered that good research will bring more opportunities to be published in national and international journals, hence it will bring more opportunities to elevate the Law School ranking. Further, good preparation in conducting research is important to strengthen the Law School rankings. The researcher needs to focus the research on a specific topic that relevant to their expertise. The result can be published in a reputable international journal (Scopus or Web of Science), International journal or national journal accredited by SINTA. In order to start publishing articles, the researcher can try to submit the article to the lower index of accredited journal by paying attention to the focus and scope of the journal, author guidelines, technical and substance requirements, as well as the peer review process. Prof. Dr. Ni Ketut Supasti Dharmawan, S.H., M.Hum., LLM also emphasized that by joining more academic events, especially any international academic event will develop our ability in research.
Hopefully, this international workshop will improve the awareness of the importance of collaborative research in elevating law school rankings. Last but not least, research is not always for ranking, but it should be continued as a culture and nurturing junior academics and helping them to be successful academics, waiting forward for collaboration between Udayana and Monash Law School.
