Comprehensive Tourism Health Education Model Leads Sri Nopiyani to Obtain Doctoral Degree in Medical Sciences

Located in the third floor Postgraduate courtroom, the Doctoral Promotion exam was held with the promovenda candidate dr. Ni Made Sri Nopiyani, MPH with the dissertation title "Comprehensive Tourism Health Education Model Improving Attitudes, Subjective Norms, Perception of Behavioral Control, Role Identity, Actual Behavioral Control, and Intention to Provide Tourism Health Information to Tour Guides in Bali" (16/8/2022) .

Tourists are at risk of experiencing health problems during their travels. Tour guides have the potential to be involved in the promotion of travel health, but only a subset of tour guides convey this information to the tourists they serve. This study aims to develop a comprehensive tourism health education model for tour guides to improve the behavior of providing health information to tourists.

The design of this research is exploratory mixed methods which consists of three phases. The first phase is a qualitative study with an informed grounded theory approach. In-depth interviews were conducted with 21 guide informants and the management of the Bali Indonesian Tour Guides Association (HPI). Data analysis was carried out by thematic analysis. The second phase is the interim phase for the development of the educational model and its instruments. The third phase is a quantitative study with a randomized pre-test post-test repeated measures control group design involving 76 tour guides in the intervention and control groups. Data were collected through self-administered questionnaires at five time points. Data analysis was performed using RM ANCOVA and SEM-PLS.

The results of the qualitative study show that there are behavioral beliefs, normative beliefs, and control beliefs that negatively affect attitudes, subjective norms, and perceptions of behavioral control. In addition, there is actual behavior control and role identity that is less supportive. The educational model targets all these behavioral determinants through synchronous online learning for 10 hours (2 days) and providing information through WhatsApp groups every week for 8 weeks. During the intervention period, there was an increase in the mean scores of all dependent variables in the intervention group.

The mean score of all dependent variables in the intervention group was also significantly higher than the control group at each measurement time during the intervention. The biggest difference in mean scores between the two groups is on the actual behavior control while the smallest difference is on the behavioral intention. Role identities, attitudes and subjective norms are related to the tour guide's intention to provide tourist health information.

A comprehensive tourism health education model that was developed in a participatory manner and in accordance with the needs of tour guides is effective in improving attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, actual behavior control, role identity, and intention to provide tourist health information to tourists.
